Food Related/School Related Pet Peeve

I think all of you know that Tuesdays are my foe...I have clinical all day and then it's straight to class from 7-9pm. With unpredictable traffic, there's really not time (nor an easy on/easy off place) to stop and get something to eat. It's difficult to think of a suitable dinner to bring, one that won't be ruined if frozen in winter or that requires refrigeration in the warmer months.

These dilemmas leave me with one option, eating at school. The school is basically a commuter school, it has no dorms and it relies heavily on it's non traditional student/grad student population to keep things afloat. These students primarily attend classes offered after the typical work day, either from 4-7p or from 7-9p.

Here enters my pet peeve....
The sad excuse for a food option (really the only one that isn't just a tiny Starbuck's Express), is located in the student union. It only operates until 6pm! Does that seem illogical to you? It would seem to me that if the second set of night classes are first starting at 7pm, you would keep the store open until around then so you can get the extra business. Also, the times I do make it to school a little early, everything is entirely picked over and they have started shutting down everything. I rarely get to campus before 6 due to traffic, leaving me with junk food from the bookstore as the only option. To make it worse, the bookstore doesn't even sell beverages!

Last night, I did not make it in time so I got some Baked Lays and a Sprite Zero from the Starbuck's express. Not ideal dinner for a pregnant lady. I've started to eat a bigger lunch in anticipation that dinner is going to be hard to come by.

Isn't that ridiculous? Makes me want to write a letter.....

Pet Peeve Within a Pet Peeve

One of my coworkers insists on cramming our tiny dorm size refrigerator full of 20 oz bottles of soda, even though this barely leaves enough room for other people's food. Does the coworker drink one and then replace that one with a warm soda that will be chilled the following day when he/she desires it? No! That would make too much sense. Instead, the sodas are crammed in the fridge each Monday, lining the doors (this coworker actually tapes them into the side of the door so that they don't spill).

I'm guessing this taping mechansim has gone awry, since yesterday there has been a sticky spilled soda mess by the fridge. Again, I will state that only one person up here stores soda in the fridge. Do you think said person has bothered to clean up the goo? Of course not...I am wondering how long we are all going to have to look at it before someone does something, I'm not going to be that someone.

Rudeness!

I was riding the commuter rail home the other night and decided to sit close to the door, I'm neurotic and like to have my exit strategy :) Anyway, the seat set up is like on an old train car, one bench facing the other bench without the benefit of one of those tables. There was a woman sitting on the bench facing me, in the seat by the window so I sat kiddy corner to her, not directly across from her. I went to put my various back packs and bags up on the seat next to me and realized that she was storing her stuff there even though the seat right next to her was open. She definitely saw me sit down and made no move to clear some space for my things. I was seriously tempted to put my things on her bench but didn't want to stoop to her level.

Instead, I put my backpack on the ground (it's been all over the train previously so why not add a new layer of gross to it) but I did put my purse on top of her stuff and adjusted her things slightly to do that. Because of her things and now my purse on that seat, I had to basically sprawl into the aisle becuase her personal belongings were taken up 75% of my seat.

We finally get to her stop, which was unfortunately the one right before mine, and she removes her things. Sort of to make a point, I immediately shuffle over to the inner seat and go to put my things on the bench only to realize that now she was standing in between the seats so I had nowhere to put my legs, and she was resting her stuff where I was sitting a fraction of a second ago. I started putting my things on the seat around her purse and then she finally lifted her bag up, although she still insisted on perching it on top of my things until the train stopped.

Isn't that rude? Who does that? I think all my pet peeves center around people either being oblivious to everyone else, or maybe realizing that other people exist but just feeling their needs are more important. Case in point with this example.

Are you kidding me??

There are certain people I work with who probably haven't done a complete 40 hour work week since the beginning of the year...first of all, how hard is it to just come to work and do your job? Secondly, it's so annoying to see this go on and nothing is done about it. Also, the cut deepens when I realize that we both get the same lousy raise year in and year out.

Where's that light at the end of the tunnel again??

Don't Know

There is a class I was hoping would be offered in summer online to save me from going to campus on both Monday and Tuesday in Fall. I emailed the grad student liason today to ask if they have made a decision and she told me it would indeed be offered in summer and that I should drop the one for Fall. I go to verify that the course is listed in the system so that I can drop one and sign up for the other. Nope. Not there. Only the undergradaute equivalent. I refuse to drop this class without seeing the other one listed for Summer because I could totally see a situation where I drop the Fall one, the decide not to run the Summer one, I try to resign up for Fall and it's full. No thank you. These thoughts are followed by the following emails:

Me: I don't see this class posted yet in the listings of summer courses, unles I'm overlooking it. Do you know the dates for summer registration, perhaps it will be listed closer to that date?
Her: Don't know.

Umm...ok??? Who might know if not you? It's really unprofessional to just tell me you don't know. You can say you don't know but you'll get back to me, you don't know but here's who would...but not just you don't know. That's incredibly ridiculous.

Pet Peeve

Today's pet peeve:

When you are walking and the person in front of you as walking at basically the same pace as you, but you are a bit too close so you have to slow down to not run into them and you can't get around them because of large trucks and trees, as was my scenario this morning. If you try to pass them, you would have to break into a light jog and look slightly moronic.

The resolution: Did attempt the pass when I had room to go around, but the fastest I could walk without jogging was the same pace this guy was walking so we walked down the hall together as if we were old chums going to grab a cup of coffee on our way into work. Finally, he turned and I could resume my normal rate of speed.
