Another Nursing Slight

I was at a memorial service today for a former colleague. People were telling stories and making comments about the person and this was one of the comments...

I never thought of him as a nurse, I always thought of him as a colleague.

I hope it's evident to you why this is an absolutely dreadful thing to say.

Crazy Just Got Crazier

Crazy has just tipped the scales to outrageous people....the semester from hell has gone hellish to the 10 to the 6th power.

I wasn't totally loving my clinical rotation this time around but I was getting used to it. I was certainly learning things, just didn't care for the environment I guess. Well, I should have kept my mind thinking pleasant thoughts because karma has just bit me in the keister.

I went to clinical on Tuesday and was told by a slightly embarressed office manager that my preceptor is unexpectedly out for at least the next 30 days aka pretty much the rest of the semester aka I'm screwed.

Let's break it down:
Requirement: 225 clinical hours
Current total: 89
Allowance for working on project: 20
Allowance for conference: 8
Remaining hours needed:108
Weeks left to accomplish goal: 7

We are in crisis mode here...this could mean a total evaporation of my January break. I'm begging NP's that I work with to allow me to work with them so I don't fall totally behind schedule. I have something lined up for Monday afternoon and maybe, maybe all day Friday.

Could this suck anymore? I tried to do an exercise where I pretend that I'm somehow who sees the positive in things instead of being my realistic self. This exercise led me to thinking that the good thing about this is that we are in crunch type time frame right now with expectations of things that are due within the next week or so. With my not having clinical right now, I can totally focus on the class part of things and not be stressed about clinical. If I have to continue clinical into January, I can focus on that without having to worry about also attending class.

Then reality set back in....in the words of Wayne and Garth, this blows chunks.

And I'm not completely narcisstic, I did ask about my preceptor and was told that he was fine.

Monputer

Monputer has died, bit it, will not live to see another day. The poor thing was on it's 4th life (hard drive) and it finally refused to boot and begged me to pull the plug on the life support.

The timing, as usual, was awful having just bought plane tickets home today for almost equal to the price of the new computer and dying on the eve of a mandatory online class.

Luckily, my professor for the class was supposed to teach this class to my section on Monday but she had difficulty loading the presentation and had to reschedule us for tonight so she was understanding when I told her my computer had gone towards the light. I have to listen to an archived section and send her a summary so she knows I listened to it but that's fine.

I was quite happy with the Compaq Presario, lasting from 2004-2009, may she rest in peace. I always have a sentimental attachment to things, I cried when my first car's engine died and was towed away. With the death of my computer, I feel the same tugging at the old heart strings. I bought it out of necessity at the end of a long relationship when I suddenly found myself computerless, furnitureless, bedless, and boyfriendless. She helped me navigate the online dating world and found me my sweet M...

So it is with a heavy heart that I bid you adieu Compaq Presario...so long to your overheating and intolerance of iTunes, to your wireless card since your birth preceded commonplace wirelessness...it's been a pleasure. With my right hand over my heart and my left on the left click button of your touchpad...fare thee well!

Knitting Idears

I like to look at things in the store and think, I could make that. I would love to be able to say 'I could make that and on the cheap' but with any kind of quality yarn this is not the case.

Anyway, here are some things I can and will make in the near future...

Rudeness!

I was riding the commuter rail home the other night and decided to sit close to the door, I'm neurotic and like to have my exit strategy :) Anyway, the seat set up is like on an old train car, one bench facing the other bench without the benefit of one of those tables. There was a woman sitting on the bench facing me, in the seat by the window so I sat kiddy corner to her, not directly across from her. I went to put my various back packs and bags up on the seat next to me and realized that she was storing her stuff there even though the seat right next to her was open. She definitely saw me sit down and made no move to clear some space for my things. I was seriously tempted to put my things on her bench but didn't want to stoop to her level.

Instead, I put my backpack on the ground (it's been all over the train previously so why not add a new layer of gross to it) but I did put my purse on top of her stuff and adjusted her things slightly to do that. Because of her things and now my purse on that seat, I had to basically sprawl into the aisle becuase her personal belongings were taken up 75% of my seat.

We finally get to her stop, which was unfortunately the one right before mine, and she removes her things. Sort of to make a point, I immediately shuffle over to the inner seat and go to put my things on the bench only to realize that now she was standing in between the seats so I had nowhere to put my legs, and she was resting her stuff where I was sitting a fraction of a second ago. I started putting my things on the seat around her purse and then she finally lifted her bag up, although she still insisted on perching it on top of my things until the train stopped.

Isn't that rude? Who does that? I think all my pet peeves center around people either being oblivious to everyone else, or maybe realizing that other people exist but just feeling their needs are more important. Case in point with this example.

Sign of the Times

A local yarn store in Harvard Square has announced it's closing. My first reaction was Oh no! Then I felt guilty because I probably contributed to it. Initially, I went there pretty frequently as a novice knitter. Then I quickly learned that the deals over at WEBS could not be beat, especially with their disount program. I felt ok with this because they are still a local yarn company in the western part of the state.

But I'm still sad that the Harvard Square store is closing...they had a nice, albeit small collection. Again, no one can compete with WEBS. Not only do they have a huge store, but you can also shop their entire warehouse. Their customer service is impeccable, I also really like that they give you a shipping estimate and often times it's not as much as the estimate and you are charged only for what your shipping cost actually is instead of it being a back door way to raise prices which is pretty common.

So in the end, sad that the Harvard Square store is closing and a bit of guilt as I'm realizing that for the past 2 years I've primarily shopped at WEBS. Two thumbs up for WEBS, keep up the good work!

Weekend Recap

Friday-did nothing and got nothing accomplished. Whoop whoop!

Saturday-took a nice road trip to Mason New Hampshire to go to Parker's Maple Barn. As usual, it was a great drive filled with lots of pretty leaves and New Englandy quaintness. Pics to follow. I read an article in the Boston Globe about some foliage destinations and this was mentioned. They have a sugar shack and produce their own maple syrup in the spring. They also have a restaurant and gift shop, they make fresh maple doughnuts too. Of course, after our brunch we were too stuffed to think about having a doughnut. We could have gotten them to go but it seemed like the kind of thing one would want to have fresh....

We got home mid afternoon and were somewhat productive around the house. M washed the front steps with a deck cleaner because he's hoping to seal the steps before it snows. I did a few loads of laundry and did some home work. That night we watched the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, was cuter and more fairy tale like than I thought it would be. Entertaining, but wouldn't call it the best movie of the year or anything.

Sunday-We ran some errands during the day (gym, Target, Lowe's, Home Good's, Hallmark store, packie) and then were invited to a Fake Thanksgiving at some friends of ours who are hosting for the first time this year. We were certainly into being their guinea pigs especially when we were told not to bring anything but wine! The dinner turned our very well and we left with full bellies!

Monday-M worked from home so it was almost like I was home by myself, he was holed up in the office all day. I did more laundry, read a little bit, worked on a few projects that are coming due in a few weeks, watched Dexter and worked on S's sweater. I have now joined the sleeves to the body and finished working the decreases. I'm about to start on the saddle around the shoulders. Won't be long now and S can wear his new forest green sweater in the crisp Vermont Fall! I also managed to make 2 fresh loaves of bread yesterday, the only thing I would change with this recipe is the addition of more salt! I think I have made this recipe before and thought that but neglected to make a note in the cookbook...but this time I did.

Upcoming week:
Class tonight
Test tomorrow night
Mom on Thursday night
Friday-nothing
Saturday-haircut
Sunday-visit to S and A to pick up our meat from the farm
